While there does seem to be a thriving dating and hookup culture on campus, almost no relationship is kept secret. Walking around campus, I have run across multiple people with whom I have never interacted, yet I know intimate details of their life. For example, that they just broke up with their girlfriend or that they slept with so-and-so last weekend. This creates a strange dynamic where relationship anonymity is difficult to achieve—especially long term relationships and not one-time hookups—and where pre-conceptions of individuals are formed solely off of their romantic past.
That being said, I am only aware of the relationships within my class year and am sure there are many to which I am not privy. If you kiss someone at a party, you see them the next morning in line at Burton and if you just broke up with your partner, you cross paths walking to the gym. Living in such a confined space, these awkward encounters are unavoidable and make ending relationships even more difficult and stressful.
Tinder is mainly used to facilitates hookups between Carls, Oles and the occasional, particularly eager student from the University of Minnesota or Macalester. Having watched multiple friends create a false Tinder, the lack of honesty and authenticity involved with online dating gives me pause and it seems that the barrier of the computer screen only encourages unhealthy behavior. Furthermore, the idea of selecting your hook-up online scrapes away the romanticism involved with running into your crush at Sayles or even meeting your one night stand at Porch.
Who knows, maybe my future match is sitting somewhere on campus right now, talking, sleeping, cramming in one last study session… Or maybe not, and either is fine with me. Published in Viewpoint.

Student life at Brigham Young University is heavily influenced by the fact that a significant number of its students are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The school is privately owned by the church and aims to create an atmosphere in which secular and religious principles are taught in the same classroom. Brigham Young University’s stated purpose is to “assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life “. This tradition began during the time when Brigham Young was actively involved with the University.
This phrase is used in reference to the school’s perceived mission as an “ambassador” to the world for the LDS Church and thus, for Jesus Christ. Leaders encourage students and faculty to help fulfill the goal by following the teachings of their religion, adhering to the school’s honor code, and serving others with the knowledge they gain while attending.
BYU mandates that its students be religiously active. The affidavit must be signed by LDS church leaders and be resubmitted annually. Students have a degree of flexibility with these religious courses, although they must take at least one course covering the Book of Mormon , one covering the Doctrine and Covenants , and one covering the New Testament. All students and faculty, regardless of religion, are required to agree to adhere to an honor code. A signed commitment to live the honor code is part of the application process, and must be adhered by all students, faculty, and staff.
Students and faculty found in violation of standards are either warned or called to meet with representatives of the Honor Council. In rare cases, students and faculty can be expelled from the school or lose tenure. BYU’s social and cultural atmosphere is unique.
